Nokia N78 live pics...

Ok, I got my greasy hands on an N78. Before I do a review on this proto unit, I'd like to spend some quality time with it. So it won't be maybe a week before I write it up.

Anyway, first impressions are pretty good. The phone looks much much better in real life than photos, so I take back my words in saying that it's ugly based on pictures on the internet. I love the way the phone looks like it's off when the screen back light is off. Being a prototype unit, the build quality isn't that great, but is very acceptable. It feels as good the the N82 prototype I had, which held up fine for a long time. The screen brightness is definitely better than an N82.

Weird as the keypad looks, it's actually pretty ok to use. No major adjustments needed.

The S60 FP2 adds quite a bit candy to the UI and it feels closer to the iPhone's interface, which has nice transitions in everything you do. The iPod-like touch sensitive D-pad works great especially scrolling through your large collection of music and/or photos.

So here are just a few pictures to whet your appetite:

Sorry, but the plastic protector has gotta go.

Ahhh, much better.

It's alive.

Close up shots of the keypad.

Can't get a good picture of the back cover with the plastic protector, so bye bye.

Reminds me of the carbon fibre dash kit on my car.

Transferring my stuff over from the N82.

Manage to wring an 8800 Arte, 7900 Prism and 8600 Luna from them too. By the way, I have to give them all back, so no need to be envious.

Like I said, gimme some time to use it before I write it up. Patience my friends...

Unfortunately, they refused to give me an N96. But I'll keep bugging them.

Since there is no lens cover. Could you please let us know in your review if the lens (okay the actual lens sits beneath it) is easily scratched.

Thank you much.

Does it have 5 band or 8 band equalizer?

chickenbackside said...

It has an 8-band EQ.

Awesome blog! Really enjoy the detailed descriptions along with the pictures.
Is there a chance you could get your hands on a 6220 classic? Would be interesting to see a comparison with the N82.

Thanks

Hey chickenback, great post!

Would like to know if the sound quality of n78 is as good and loud as n73 or the n91 .

Also would like to know the details of the other phones.

Thanking You,

Apparently, someone loaded the wrong software on this protoype, and hence, it's not behaving very well.

I will go down to the Nokia office to get it sorted soon. Once I do that, I can properly evaluate the phone and give you an answer.

Nice posts buddy!

Since you are also active at mobile-review.com & I'm too lazy to create an account there (:p), here's some release info that I didn't found on that forum yet:

"The N78 is expected to be released around March/April 2008, subject to confirmation from Nokia."

source: http://blog.mobiles.co.uk/mobile-news/nokia-n78-due-for-release/

Keep in mind, I don't know how reliable the info is.. :)

keep up the good work!

Do the keypad labels change in context? They just turn black when the screen is off. It'd be great if the labels do change based on what application is running, but I doubt it.

Thanks for the info mate!

No, the labels are fixed.

Hi Mate

When are you going to be writing your opinions on this phone?
I would like to know how this phone fares against a Nokia n82.
I am looking for a new phone and am wondering if the Fm transmitter runs smoothly enough to let fact, that is has a much worse camera than the n82, slide. Also i would like to find out if the new operating system is that great as compared to the one of the n82.
I want a phone with a suberb camera and a great quality output from the extensive audio library. Wifi is an added bonus but hey the perfect phone doesnt exist yet. SO is this phone worth my money or should i buy an n82?
THX A MILLION for you opinion

ALS is the navi wheel an enyoble part of the conrols?
And does the gps work better on the n82 or do you prefer it on the n78.

chickenbackside, thanks for the pics...

i would like to know a few things:

- Does it have ''Accelerometer'' ?
- GPS better or worse than n95,n82
- Aparently, It has the longest battery life compared to the other Nseries True ?
- Got hthe phone yet ? :)

Anonymous said...

Hi when will you be posting your review? 2 weeks(any day now), 3 weeks or 4?

Anonymous said...

Yes, this will be _very_ interesting for me too:
Does it have ''Accelerometer''?

Then, this phone will be the the perfect candybare phone for my personal use!
(I want to program a driftbox.com app in Python)

I would choose an N82 over this phone anytime anyday. Unless you need the FM transmitter.

For me, I find that the naviwheel gets in the way of things. It makes it less precise to use, so I'd turn it off.

GPS is like the N82.

Yes, it does have an accelerometer. The screen rotates by itself by sensing the angle of the phone.

Battery life is comparable to an N82.

Sorry I haven't been around guys, been really budy with work.

Anonymous said...

But everywhere else is saying there is no accelerometer on it. And from videos, i see the UI is instead forced into landscape mode (e.g. Gallery).

Unless they decided to add it in? No complains here ofcoz :)

> Yes, it does have an accelerometer. The screen rotates by itself by sensing the angle of the phone.

Is this _really_ true??? Do you really use N78 and not N82??? And you didn't pressed any key???

Can you prove it again, please!?

Thank you!

Hi there, I just bought N78 yesterday, the salesman download eveything including the song. When I chk and click refresh, the refreshing button appear, but after ~4hrs [I SAID IT AGAIN ~4HRS], there is no sign the song being added. It show = 0 :((. I did check manually the memory card, all song are there [by bluetooth], but when I put it back into phone, the problem remain the same. Plz advice.

Note: I did go back to them, but they said the refreshing button might take a while, but ~4hrs, this is not 'a while' anymore, this is riddiculus!
