Apple iPhone vs the Symbians - Part 2: Beauty Contest

So is it really that good looking? Do we really need to ask?

Look at every Apple product and the answer's obvious. The iPhone easily fits into the family and emerges and one of the best looking siblibgs. Clean, industrial, minimalist design. It's a screen with a button. You can't get cleaner than that. An automotive equivalent would be an Audi RS4 wagon maybe?

But one man's meat is another man's shit, so I'll let the pictures do the talking.

iPhone vs N95

iPhone vs E61i

iPhone vs N91 8GB

iPhone vs E90

iPhone vs N93i

Tastes may vary, but hard facts like thickness can't be perceived differently. Out of all the phones above, only the E61i comes close. The rest are at least twice as thick.

I'll just mention that out of all the phones above, the iPhone's screen is easily the brightest. And it's brighter by a big margin. In the pictures above, the iPhone's screen is set to around 15% brightness and it's already brighter than the others set at 50 or 100%. At full brightness, the iPhone's screen actually hurts the eyes in a darker room.

I'll just do a couple of pics of the iPhone's screen set at 100% brightness versus the N95 8GB and E90 also set at 100%.

Wow, that is a NICE collection of phones, I don't suppose you'd like to donate one to poor student who can only dream and drool over the web :p In terms of looks, I'd say Apple definately has the edge, although it is ssubjective. But as a faithful Symbian user I've always gone for function over form, but who knows where the Symbian phone forms will be going over the next year or so... Good stuff.

Thanks imran. I'm waiting for the day when I can have an iPhone with 3G, GPS, 5MP cam with xenon flash... I love the iPhone GUI, which is derived from Palm (which I also love). There's no easier way to do things (see > tap > it happens).

I've always been a hardcore s60 fanboy but recently I've started thinking about touchscreen devices, I did a small experiment, I carried out a number of normal everyday functions on my n95 except I counted the number of button presses, and I repeated the same function this time counting the number of taps I would use if it were a touchscreen device, and I realised that touchscreens are definately the way to go, in terms of ergonomics and reducing conditions like RSI, but keypads or some kind of tactile feedback need to remain. That's why I like the new Sony ericsson w960i so much. I'd have to agree with you about the iPhone with the n82 specs ;)I'm looking forward to the new UIQ 4 because it sounds like this may just be our combination of iPhone and symbian functionality. Also let's wait and see what Nokia have to say about s60 touch...

Yeah, if I had a choice, I'd pick a touchscreen device anytime. Taking Windows devices out of the equation (I hate it and don't even own a single Windows computer), Symbian is the only choice that can deliver the goods in terms convergent technology. I'm just waiting for the day that Apple catches up. That interface is just so nice to use. I carry it around just to surf the internet and watch youtube. People with nails would find it very difficult to use though.

You use it for web browsing? I assume you have wi fi accounts for when you're out and about.. The thing that makes the iPhone uninteresting to me is the amount of restrictions around it and how the features on it are all you have, no 3rd party apps or games like symbian (yet?)

Yes, I have wifi accounts and that's why I bring it with me. Surfing on the iPhone is pleasurable. Surfing on a Symbian device is a pain. Apple has already released their codes to 3rd party developers, so you can expect plenty of 3rd party apps in time to come.

Yeah I can imagine, on that humungous screen. Browsing on the N95 is the best experience so far on keypad phones (for me as that's the most recent series 60v3 phone I have), but yeah, the iPhone does look good for browsing and generally viewing media, specially if you have the wifi accounts. Hopefully the new UIQ will have that kind of experience...
